Abstract

Secondary title: INFLUENCE AND ROLE OF SELECTED FACTORS ON NINTH GRADER'S CHOICE OF HIGH SCHOOL
Secondary abstract: Modern time requires children and adolescents to be adaptable and flexible. The same applies to career and secondary school choices. They are both part of the process named vocational guidance which represents a comprehensive and organized activity that helps individuals to make autonomous decisions on further education and their choice of profession. It consists of many consecutive activities that help adolescents to learn about themselves, to recognize their wishes, interests and abilities, and of other personal characteristics that are important for their career choices. The term vocational guidance, which is becoming increasingly important in terms of a broader social context, is also being increasingly replaced by the term career guidance. According to some authors, the latter represents more modern and broader approach, for it connects vocational, educational and personal orientation throughout the entire life. The theoretical part defines vocational guidance in terms of choice of secondary school or any type of further education. We have studied the theories of career choices that, despite their diversified theoretical frameworks, affect the individual's career choice. We have defined the role of a school counselor in ninth grader's choice of secondary school, and further studied the roles of other selected factors, such as parents or guardians, teachers, class teachers, and online media. The empirical part presents the research on the influence of selected factors on the choice of secondary school which was carried out in several primary schools in the Municipality of Maribor. Special focus was on the influence of a school counselor, and on the role of the school in terms of informing and carrying out activities in relation to vocational guidance. Results reveal that parents and the school counselor have the highest influence on the ninth grader's choice of secondary school.
