Abstract

Secondary title: Violence against the elderly in institutional and home environment
Secondary abstract: Violence against the elderly in general in recent years attracted a lot of attention of both professional and lay public. There have been accepted a number of laws, measures and programs put in place to assist victims of violence. The theoretical part of the master's thesis defines the problem of the growing aging population, the discriminatory behavior of the society towards the elderly and violence against them. The continuation of the master's thesis consists of the risk factors for the occurrence of violence in the offender and the victim and the impact of the community, society and interpersonal relations on this issue. We have also presented the regulation of this occurence and have highlighted the main carriers of the responsibility to protect older people who are victims of violence. We have mentioned the organizations and institutions to which elderly people can turn for help if they find themselves in distress. By carrying out the questionnaire, we have tried to determine where violence occurs, the form in which it appears, against whom it is the most frequently performed and who are the perpetrators. The participants were a total of 43 men and 177 women, of whom 131 were residents of retirement homes in Ljubljana and 89 were individuals, who continue to live at home. The sampling frame consisted of persons, older than 65 years, who were oriented in time, space and place. A total of 47 individuals were abused, 30 of them in home environment, with prevailing psychological violence, neglect and economic violence, committed by other relatives, partners and offspring, and 17 in nursing homes, with prevailing psychological, economic and physical violence, committed by rommates and caregivers. Most victims were older than 75 years, the majority of whom were women. The main reasons for the occurence of violence were physical helplessness of the elderly and the lack of social contact of the perpetrators.
