Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂinclusion of the Faculty of Education students in the eco-school programme
Secondary abstract: Since 2013, the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana has been included in the Eco-school programme. The programme aims to encourage the education of children, young people and students for sustainable development. The purpose of the study was to establish the extent to which students are familiar with activities carried out within the programme, their attitudes to the programme and the extent of their sustainability-oriented behaviour. The study included 83 students of the Faculty of Education. Data was collected with a questionnaire specially created for the purpose of the study. Results show that students are familiar with some general sustainability-oriented activities, carried out within the Eco-school programme at the Faculty, however, they fail to recognise specific activities, which they estimate as less promoted. The students have a positive attitude towards the programme and wish to be better informed about the foreseen activities. Students support the Faculty's inclusion in the Eco-school programme, since they are aware that it helps develop their positive attitudes to the environment, create their positive positions as well as further forms of sustainability-oriented behaviour. Students frequently behave in a sustainability-oriented manner including separate collection of waste, turning off the lights, reducing the quantities of waste food and paper towels in toilets, and water saving, which is encouraged with measures carried out within the Eco-school programme at the Faculty. It is estimated that the improved promotion in information of students about the activities may increase motivation and more active inclusion of students in foreseen programme activities. Students as future teachers are important stakeholders in encouraging sustainable behaviour in pupils therefore it is important for them to acquire necessary knowledge and to form a responsible attitude towards sustainable development during their studies.
