Abstract

Secondary title: Dark places and stories of municipalities of Brežice and Krško as basis for the development of dark tourism
Secondary abstract: Dark tourism is defined as tourism that involves traveling to places associated with death, violence, various types of disasters and catastrophes, which still have a strong influence on our lives. Such places are described as dark. Traveling to dark places is motivated by visitor’s desire for actual or symbolic encounter with death. While traveling connected to death and tragedies is traced back to the period of ancient Rome, when people attended gladiatorial contests, the notion of dark tourism appeared at the end of the last century. The desire of tourists to visit the sites associated with death, horror and suffering has been increasing. In Slovenia, the area of dark tourism is still relatively unexplored. In our research, we focus on the dark places and stories, related to the area of the municipalities of Brežice and Krško. The aim is to find out if they carry any potential for the development of dark tourism.
