Abstract

Secondary title: Lotus birth
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Lotus (child)birth is a practice of leaving the umbilical cord uncut after birth, leaving it until the cord naturally separates at the child's navel. In this way the child is enabled a gentle transition into life outside the womb. Objectives: In this thesis the author wanted to find out what is lotus birth and how it is performed. The intention was also to establish why families decide for lotus birth and what are its advantages and risks. Methods: In writing the thesis a descriptive method of works was used, with a review of domestic and foreign scientific and professional literature. Literature search was limited to English and Slovenian language, due to the small number of sources there was no time limit. Discussion: The benefits of late interruption of the umbilical cord have been known for a long time and positively affect both the newborn child and the mother. Lotus birth enables full transfusion of placental blood, in addition, many believe that it brings numerous advantages on the spiritual and etheric level. They believe that cutting the umbilical cord is an aggressive procedure for a child and with lotus birth we avoid stress caused by the cutting of the cord. Conclusion: It is clear from the literature review that lotus birth as a practice is a very unexplored territory which is not supported by evidence. Currently, there is not enough research on the potential risks for the child, that is why the authors themselves agree that it is necessary to carry out further research in this area and put it into practice.
