Abstract

Secondary abstract: In our life, health represents a precondition for our behaviour. Only if we are healthy, we can be productive and productivity makes us feel useful, and that gives our life a meaning. For the highest possible productivity, we need to know how to maintain health, both in prevention and in cure. In addition to maintaining our health, our obligation is to help another human, and with our actions to contribute to a better overall health. People responsible for the most vulnerable group of the society, children, have an especially important role. Among others, these are elementary education teachers, who daily meet the youngest as a part of the educational process. If there are a lot of people, there are also a lot of chances for health risks. Teachers are legally liable for all of the participants of the educational process, which is a reason for them to be well-educated in the area of health education. In the first part of the survey, we were interested in how students, finishing undergraduate studies of elementary education in Slovenia, perceive health education, what are their attitudes toward health education, what their assessment of the obtained knowledge in this area is, and which fields of first aid find the most important. In the second part of the survey, we focused on looking for contents related to health education in elementary education study programmes in Slovenia. We compared objectives, competences, curricula, and a set of elective subjects in the mentioned study programmes. The third part of the survey was carried out at three randomly chosen primary schools, where we checked whether they keep records of injuries, whether they have minutes of injuries, and the number of injuries in the last 5 years, as well as what kind of injuries occur. We came to the (expected) conclusions that students of the elementary education in Slovenia feel a lack of the obtained knowledge in the field of health education. In addition, they agree that such subject should be a part of the curriculum of the elementary education study programme, since currently they do not feel competent to act in case of child's injury. Comparing different elementary education study programmes, there is almost no trace of the content from the field of health education; significant deviations were also noted in choice of elective subjects among the faculties. Based on minutes, primary schools keep records of injuries A number of injuries is increasing yearly; a variety of injuries occur, which require a competence in the area of health education from the responsible persons.
