Abstract

Secondary title: Parenting and types of punishment in relation to child's experience of peer violence
Secondary abstract: Bullying is happening everywhere, mostly in places without the presence of an adult. Roles in bullying are repeating - a child, who is a victim of such violence once, is probably a victim over and over again and a child who is a bully will repeatedly victimize others. Involvement in bullying leaves individuals with negative feelings and memories for life. The aim of this work is to see whether there is a relation between parenting and types of punishment in relation to experience of peer violence. In a survey, 238 parents of children in primary education participated. Results show that most parents are using an authoritative style of parenting and if their children do something wrong, they talk with them. Some parents often use psychological punishment; time out, shouting, insulting, threatening, ignoring, taking away the child's possessions and prohibition of certain benefits. Although rare, physical punishment is still present in some families. In our research, we detected that around nine percent of parents punish their child with punches (with hand or with objects), kicks, spilling water or other liquids on the child and pulling their hair or ears. Children who are raised in an authoritarian or chaotic style are more often perceived as victims of peer violence by their parents, than children who are raised in an authoritative or permissive style. Children who are perceived as bullies by their parents are more often those who are punished by their parents physically and are raised in a chaotic or permissive style.
