Abstract

Secondary title: Comparison of different quality triangular bandage for first-aid kit
Secondary abstract: Introduction: The definition of the first aid emphasizes that the first aid provider helps with simple gadgets and improvisation. Nowadays there are numerous first aid kits and boxes available that facilitate the emergency care of injured and suddenly sick persons. The content of some first aid kits is predefined and comprises of different bandaging and immobilization remedies including the triangular kerchief. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to identify differences in quality of triangular bandages from different manufacturers and materials. My aim was to find out what bandage is the most firm by production and to point out the importance of the quality of the bandage when giving the first treatment. Methods: There was the method of measuring of tearing strength on dynamometer used. Measurements were carried out on Natural Sciences and Engineering Faculty in Ljubljana. There were 15 triangular bandages tested. We have cut every bandage (sample) two times transversally and two times longitudinally. The review of literature has also been done. Results: It was discovered that the tearing force of triangular bandages depends on type of weave, density of weave and material. Four of the samples were significantly better than all the others. It was find out that these four are made of the same material and they have the same type and density of weaving. The least strong are bandages made of veil that has been used in the recent years. Discussion and conclusion: It would be reasonable to consider manufacturing and materials of triangular bandages. Also the legislator shall pay attention to it, namely the Rule on parts and equipment of vehicles determines that packaging of first aid kit has to be waterproof, damage- and impurity- resistant. There is also the content of the first aid kit predefined but not its minimal quality. It should be required by the legislator that the only acceptable are triangular bandages that reach the appropriate quality level. This would force the manufacturers to produce bandages of higher quality and they wouldn’t break so easily. Also the givers of first treatment shall be aware of the fact that all the triangular bandages are not of the same quality, because it was found out that some of them can withstand very little force before they tear apart.
