Abstract

Secondary title: Functionalization of cotton fibers with carboxymethylcellulose
Secondary abstract: Because of its properties cotton is very useful. Unwanted properties like shrinkage, hydrophility/hydrophobity and burning behaviour can be reduced by use of various finishing processes. In the field of cellulose materials there are many modification methods of changing the functionality of cotton. Many of these processes are environment unfriendly or lead to bad material fastness or to poor mechanical properties, which means a low applicability of the final product. Cellulose treatment with different polysaccharides gives good results in functionality and applicability. Controlled modification of surface functionality of fibres results in a more efficient treatment conditions, which means a better efficiency in use of chemicals with equal or even higher quality of final product. In the diploma work we discovered the influence of functionalization (modification) with carboxymethylcellulose on the properties of cotton, especially total charge and hydrophility of fibres and, on the other hand, the effect of mentioned modification on the applicable properties of the cotton fibres. The results are quite promising, as the topochemical modification with carboxymethylcellulose gives excellent results. It is the method that simultaneously gives higher total charge and hydrophility, preserving the mechanical properties of the cotton fibres. It is obvious that these parameters result in a better fibre adsorption capacity for the wide range of specific substrates, especially those with cationic character.
