diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa
Abstract

The effectiveness of water filters |
Secondary abstract: |
The objective of this diploma was to determine the effectiveness of two different filtrating systems: BRITA, based on the ion exchange and Oasis, consisting of a complex system of filtering cartridges made of activated carbon and ceramics (so called the green filtrating system). Chemical and microbiological analyses of filtered tap water were performed in order to determine the effectiveness of both filtrating systems. Those parameters were measured which should be removed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
For the first system the 8 L of filtrated water was chosen as a reference water quantity, because according to the recommendations a 4-member-family daily consumes so much water. Using the second system which is bigger and therefore suited for industrial use, 20 L of water was filtered. After the filtration we took a 1 L of water samples for the analyses.
We can conclude that the filtrating system BRITA is less effective, because after filtrating only 30 L of water, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate are not satisfactory removed. The organic content after filtration did not decrease much. The filtrating system Oasis removes chlorine and organic substances throughout the whole experiment. However, it does not remove nitrates. After filtering 300 L of water it was microbiologically contaminated and nitrite concentration increased, therefore, the system must me immediately purified. |
