Abstract

Secondary title: Adsorption of formulation chitosan and curcumin on viscose fibers used for medical purposes
Secondary abstract: Because of the rise of infections and diseases caused by microbiological activity the use of medical textiles is becoming increasingly important and expanding field of textile industry nowadays. Due to the increasing awareness of people and the rise of the standard the desire of developmental areas is to find lasting solutions for functionalization of textile materials with natural compounds that have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and beneficial effects on both humans and the environment. Chitosan is on of the natural polysaccharides with antimicrobial activity and has a molecular structure which allows a wide range of modifications. It is a modified natural carbohydrate derived from chitin, which is a core component of the skeletons of crustaceans, molluscs, insects, fungi and algae. It has the ability to inhibit bacteria, fungi and viruses. Notwithstanding the fact that chitosan shows excellent properties such as good adhesion, anti-microbial activity and biodegradation, its disadvantage is shown in weak antioxidant efficiency. Due to the discoveries of toxicologists and nutritionists regarding the carcinogenicity of some synthetic antioxidants the alternative for improved antioxidant capacity to use natural substances with proven antioxidant activity is becoming very popular. These natural substances include plant (poly)phenols. Curcumin, an extract from the Asian spice Turmeric (Curcuma longa) also offers strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity. The purpose of our work is to develop new synergetic combinations between chitosan and curcumin which will demonstrate antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics. Diverse synergetic combinations were adsorbed onto the viscous fabric to reach the antimicrobial and antioxidant functionalization, essential for medical textiles. We carried out various techniques of applying different combinations of the two polymer solutions (chitosan-curcumin) and find the one that gives us the optimal functioning of all the desired properties. The goal of our thesis is also to examine the binding of these two compounds on the textile material and to determine the nature of binding and desorption of substances on the surface of the textiles.
