Abstract

Secondary title: Comparative economic and environmental analysis of biofuel conversion technologies
Secondary abstract: The purpose of this diploma work was to systematically collect and incorporate analysis of various technological processes into a comprehensive system of the production of first and second generation biofuels in Slovenia, by taking all aspects of sustainable development into account. The potential and priority of different types of biomass for biofuel production were estimated. The central objective of the work was to perform environmental and economic analysis of 12 biofuel conversion technologies for 14 selected input biomass materials. Three general economic and environmental analysis of biofuel production systems were conducted: (1) analysis based on the chosen area of cultivated raw materials, (2) comparison of quantities of biofuels that could be theoretically produced from existing biomass in Slovenia and (3) analysis of biofuels production with the amount of biomass, necessary to achieve the EU Directive on the introduction of biofuels in transport fuels in Slovenia. Results indicate that the technology to produce second generation biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass is getting economically feasible and viable despite higher capital investment, as compared to first generation biofuels. Among technologies for the first generation biofuels production, technology for biodiesel production has proven to be the most economically feasible and viable.
