Povzetek

V diplomskem delu obravnavam posredovanje mobilnih oziroma pametnih telefonov v medosebnih interakcijah.

Sekundarni naslov: The mobile phone as a disruption in focused interaction
Sekundarni povzetek: In my thesis I deal with the interference of mobile/smart phones in interpersonal interactions. I have focused mainly on focused interaction, which occurs between two people. This kind of interaction is the most exacting for its participants as it demands a lot of their attention. My central point of interest was how the individual uses their phone during focused interaction and also how they react when their interlocutor is using it. My research was based on Goffman’s theory on how the individual manages their interactions and behaviour when in the presence of others. I applied his concepts (face work, avoidance and corrective processes) to communication situations in which interaction is interrupted by a phone. My goal was to find out how the partners engaged in the interaction try to save their faces (positive images) and the impressions they make on each other. I conducted a focus group with five participants, aged between 23 and 27, and in the second part of this thesis I have, using theoretical groundwork, presented how young people deal with the use of mobile phones in their interpersonal interactions. Despite my presumptions about them having much more tolerance for it, they made it clear in their answers that they see mobile phones as a disruptive factor in their interactions. They explicitly avoid using their phones during focused interaction and ignore all incoming texts or calls. Although they find it annoying when their partner is using their phone, they remain considerate and try to distract themselves by doing other things, such as playing with food or looking around. By behaving tactfully, they prevent not just the partner’s positive image being threatened but also maintain the flow of the interaction itself.
