Modern language technologies contribute to faster, better-quality and more cost-effective translation and are an inevitable part of a translator's daily routine. With the development of technology and, in particular, artificial intelligence, the competences of the translator are also changing, making the translator a proofreader, a multilingual and intercultural expert, and a corrector of machine translations. The aim of this master's thesis is to compare the quality of the translations and the consistency of the terminology of a part of the annual report of the insurance company Allianz for 2023 from German into Slovenian, which have been created with the help of three online and freely available machine translation services, that is, DeepL Translator, the artificial intelligence Chat GPT and Google Translate, and to find out how the profession and the competences of the translator are changing in the light of the rapid development of technology. In the theoretical part, we introduced the insurance company Allianz, annual reports as a type of technical texts, technical language and the specific features of terminology in the field of insurance and finance. We highlighted the functionalist theory and the skopos theory, on the basis of which we made an analysis of terminology. In the empirical part, we investigated the quality of the translations of a certain part of the annual report of the insurance company Allianz and of the translations of terminology from German into Slovenian, which were created with the help of all three of the online machine translation services listed above. In the final part of the thesis, we present and comment on the findings of the empirical research and, on the basis of this research, we indicate the changes in the competences that translators need to make in the light of the rapid development of machine translation. |
