(diplomsko delo)

Parental awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Theoretical background: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS is an unexpected death of a baby, which usually happens in the first year of life when the child sleeps or takes a nap. This is definitely one of the most tragic events, which can happen to parents who put a perfectly healthy baby to sleep in the evening. Experts say that a cause or causes for it (despite numerous researches) still have not been found. However, their opinion is that there is a combination of several factors. Parents are warned that with proper handling of infants, they can significantly reduce a potential for this tragedy. Parents need to be aware of how crucial the knowledge of preventive measures and compliance with these is.
Research methodology: The purpose of this study is to describe a healthy newborn, a definition of infants risk groups, and to present the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The study has determined to what extend parents are aware of ˝death in the cradle" (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), or how much they know about preventive measures to minimize the risk and how many of them considers the information.
Results: The research has shown that parents are informed of the sudden death syndrome essential data. However, people pay too little attention to certain preventive measures. Most uncertainties are shown in the best position for sleeping babies. Most parents believe that any further information on this topic are welcome.
Conclusion: We have found out that the knowledge of parents about sudden death syndrome or 'death in the cradle' (despite some good answers) is not enough. All parents strive their best to protect their children from any harm and disasters, therefore, we believe that additional training would be needed. Some lectures on this topic would be appropriate, waiting rooms should also have brochures with information about SIDS which parents could read. This could be some ways to gain and even upgrade their knowledge and all parents would know how to deal with their babies. |
