The first part of the thesis describes layers of pavement structure, exposure and distress of surface
layers. Pavements can be maintained either by surface or structural rehabilitation. The main difference
is in complexity and financial costs of maintenance. Cold in-place recycling with fly ash is a part of
structural rehabilitation. The technology of recycling is produced by the German company Wirtgen.
Fly ash is a by-product of coal combustion. Depositing of fly ash must be provided on suitable depots.
In present time, usage of fly ash is increasing in road construction.
The second part of the thesis describes practical application of fly ash to cold in-place recycling. The
case study was the reconstruction of Podrošt – Češnjica road in Železniki municipality. The road was
severely damaged in the flood of 2007. Initially, the project predicted that mill and replace of
pavement structure would be implemented, but the contractor applied for technology change to cold
recycling. In the process, subgrade soil was stabilized with fly ash and granular base was built of
milled asphalt. Using new technology, we successfully reduced material consumption and much less
newly manufactured material was needed. The thesis also presents preliminary researches of existing
pavement, construction procedure and analysis of external supervisor’s report. In conclusion I tried to
analyze the economic and environmental aspects of mill and replace of pavement structure and cold
in-place recycling; furthermore, I tried to ascertain that cold in-place recycling is more economic and
environmentally friendly than mill and replace of pavement structure. |
