Sekundarni povzetek: This thesis presents a safety evaluation of Kolizej considering load bearing capacity of the structure due to vertical loading and seismic action. Structural system and it’s state of conservation, obtained from the in-situ survey, are presented after a short review of the building’s history. Mechanical characteristics of brick and mortar were evaluated from the laboratory tests on specimens taken from Kolizej. Those results helped us determine the wall’s compression and tension strenght, which have then been used throughout the analysis. Load bearing capacity of the structure due to vertical loading was calculated according to provisions of EC6. Assessment of seismic resistance by means of nonlinear static method was made by using computer program SREMB, which requires tension strenght (as in former standards). Results are in the form of hystreresis envelopes and seismic resistance coefficient (SRCu). These results are then compared with seismic resistance calculated according to SIST EN 1998-3. These thesis also includes the possibilities of strenghtening interventions for old stone or brick buildings in general and an estimation of seismic resistance in case of interventions on Kolizej. First, heavy load on the vaults is removed, then heavy walls in upper floors are replaced with lighter materials and and the final option is a total reconstruction of the building while keeping the same structural system but using better materials.
