Sekundarni naslov: Nutrition and attitude towards food: their correlation with self-esteem in early adolescence
Sekundarni povzetek: The main area of the dissertation is eating and attitude towards food, in elementary children and the integration between food and self-respect. In the theoretical introduction I present the period of adolescence, based on contemporary knowledge in the field of eating. I present the guidelines for healthy nutrition and the eating habits of adolescents, which in some cases can lead to eating disorders. In the next chapter I define self-respect as an aspect of the perception of ones self, focusing primarily on the self-esteem of adolescents and the factors that influence the development of (physical) self-esteem. The empirical part is made out of the results of a survey conducted with students in the 4th and the 8th grade. The goal of the survey was, to determine what kind of nutritional habits and attitudes towards food the 4th and 8th grade students have and how do the eating habits associate with self-esteem. To determine the eating habits and attitude towards food I complied together with my mentor, a questionnaire, on diet and attitude towards food in elementary school, for self-determination questions I rearranged the already existing questionnaire (Lamovec, 1994). The study included 120 students from two primary schools, 60 students in 4th grade and 60 in the 8th grade. The results show that the majority of pupils in the 4th and the 8th class regularly eat the three main meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), which mostly consist foods with carbohydrates and to a lesser extent consist of fruits and vegetables. The students in the 4th grade compared to the students in the 8th grade agree in a greater extent that their food means something to them and that they eat a fairly healthy diet. Significant differences between age groups are not found on their self- assessment of (moderate) consumption of food. The 4th grade students in compared to the 8th grade students, believe that they eat more regularly, that they eat more fruit and vegetables and less sweets and junk food; they also weigh themselves more regularly and engage in different sport activities to maintain body weight. The students in the 4th grade and the 8th grade say that they often feel good and relaxed when in company (social ego), that they are relatively satisfied with their body (physical ego), that they experience mostly pleasant feelings (emotional ego) and that they appreciate themselves enough and are confident in their abilities (self-esteem). At the level of the entire group of students the important positive correlation between dietary habits and different areas of self-esteem showed to be between ''regular diet'' and the emotional self as well as ''exercise to maintain body weight'' and the self-confidence and ''eating too much sweets'' associated negatively to social and emotional ego and self-confidence.
