Students' attitudes towards amphibians and their knowledge of amphibians |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
We live in a time where there is an increasing emphasis on environmental attitudes and interest in the environment and organisms. Toads and other amphibians are animals which children consider to be some of the most disgusting animals. Before teachers can take measures to protect amphibians, they have to find out about the students' attitudes towards and knowledge of these animals. The purpose of our research was to find out how the attitudes towards toads and the knowledge of amphibians was affected by age, gender, level of education, contact with nature, place where the students live and direct experience with a toad. Questionnaires were filled out by 612 students, ranging from primary school age to those in their penultimate year in high school. The results show that of the possible variables, the level of education, gender and direct experience with a toad were the biggest influences on attitude and knowledge. The level of knowledge of students in primary school and high school about amphibians was influenced by age. Direct experince with a toad also influenced primary school students whereas where the students lived influenced the high school students' knowledge. The results give teachers an insight into their students' attitudes towards amphibians and their knowledge about amphibians, which are both important starting points in establishing the appropriate approach in the classroom which will enable more positive attitudes towards amphibians and a better understanding of them. |
