Sekundarni naslov: Eating habits of people with Down syndrome
Sekundarni povzetek: The main aim of our thesis was to examine eating habits and occurrence of excess weight according to body mass index (BMI) calculations in persons with Down syndrome (DS) in Slovenia. We conducted a study which included 21 children with DS; the data on the participants were provided by their parents. The results have shown that more than 50% of persons with DS included in the study were overweight. We found that children with DS most commonly consume four meals a day; the meal that they most often skip is the mid-morning snack. Regarding the consumption frequency of different foods the study has shown that the participants most frequently eat bread, while they least often opt for fish. They never or rarely consume fast food; those who occasionally indulge in it most often choose pizza. We have also examined their meat consumption; we found that parents of children with DS most frequently prepare poultry for them. For the majority of our participants water is their drink of choice, while they least often reach for mineral water and fizzy drinks. Finally, we interviewed the participants’ parents in order to establish how they perceive their child's weight. Most parents believe their child is overweight; however, they feel that overall their family follows a healthy diet.
