magistrsko delo

Satisfaction and stress of parents with children with specific learning disabilities |
| Sekundarni povzetek: |
In recent years, the topic of children suffering from dyslexia and specific learning disabilities (SLD) has been gaining attention. Numerous studies have been conducted, the methods of working with children with such disabilities have been developed, and public awareness of the issue has been raised. However, a topic that has often been forgotten is the role of the parents, their satisfaction and stress they experience. This thesis strives to shift attention towards a better understanding of the parents. We have examined the quality of their life, the work-family conflict, the stress they experience, and the burdens they face. To achieve our goal, we conducted a web research including 142 parents of children with SLD and dyslexia. The participants were invited to fill in the questionnaire by associations offering support to parents and children and through social media. The final sample consisted of 138 female and 3 male participants. The average age of the participants was M = 43,1 years (SD = 7,3); the youngest participant was 16 years old, while the oldest was 63 years old. We have concluded that parents who are involved in their child's school work in a greater measure and who experience a greater amount of work-family conflict also experience a greater amount of stress. Important conclusions of our research also include negative correlations between parental stress, family cohesiveness and quality of life. The results expose the problems that parents of children with dyslexia and SLD are facing. The thesis shifts attention to this specific population and offers suggestions for providing it with support and help. The research has been designed to measure elements that comprise the little-researched topic of the thesis. Its simplicity and accessibility make the questionnaire easy to use. The largest disadvantage of all questionnaires of similar nature is self-assessment, which takes place without supervision in an uncontrolled environment. |
