There are 4 taxa from Vicia sativa agg. known in Slovene flora: Vicia sativa s. str., Vicia angustifolia with two subspecies Vicia angustifolia subsp. angustifolia and Vicia angustifolia subsp. segetalis, Vicia cordata and Vicia macrocarpa. Their distinction is quite difficult because of crossbreeding of cultivated and native plants.
First, I made a table of discriminative characters, for the distinction among species.
Then the herbarium material from Herbarium LJU, from Department of Biology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana was revised.
While examining I checked the adequacy of all the discriminative characters. There were 24 morphological characters I observed or measured on 124 herbarium samples.
After having examined the herbarium material, we found out that the species V. sativa, V. angustifolia and V. cordata are common in Slovenia. While the presence of V. macrocarpa was not confirmed. Some herbarium samples could not be classified, because morphological characters did not completely match any of the discussed species. In these cases further analysis is needed. We did not classify the plants to subspecies. For this also further analysis is needed.
Most samples in Herbarium LJU belong to V. Cordata. Many of them were previously classified as V. sativa or V. angustifolia. In Herbarium LJU there is no sample of the species V. macrocarpa. The new maps, showing the distribution of Vicia sativa agg. in Slovenia, match well with the so far known distribution of the species of Vicia sativa agg. |
