diplomsko delo

Translating proper names in fantasy literature |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
This paper deals with the translation of proper names in fantasy literature. First, we have outlined the theory of translation and the problem of translating proper names and then presented the literary genre of fantasy. For the purposes of this paper, we have chosen the iconic work of fantasy literature, The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, which has been a fan favourite for millions of readers all over the world for decades. Slovenia is one of the few countries in the world with two different translations of the book, which gave us the unique opportunity to not only compare the translations with the original, but to compare the two translations among themselves. We have taken a look at how the translators of both translations dealt with Hobbit names - did they simply transfer them or did they opt for translation? We have found that the names of the characters that carry meaning were translated in both cases, which seems like a sensible thing to do. After all, this was what the author of the book asked of the translators, which is why he had set out to write a set of guidelines for them. After analysing and comparing the translations, we have established, that it was the author of the second translation who more closely complied with the author's instructions. The second translation is also overall a better translation then the first one, which was a joint project of three translators. |
