Abstract

Secondary title: Understanding idioms from teaching materials and everyday life
Secondary abstract: The use of idioms is very common in school and in our everyday lives but since phraseology is still a very young science, it is not much explored yet. Expressing ourselves through idioms makes our language richer and more interesting. Understanding idioms can sometimes be complicated because they are phrases that have transferred meaning. Comprehension increases with age and children reach the general level of perception by the end of primary school. In master's thesis titled Understanding Idioms from Teaching Materials and Everyday Life understanding of selected idioms with third graders has been studied. Comprehension was examined by knowledge testing, which contained tasks with idioms, both from the teaching materials and from everyday life. We examined whether there are differences in understanding of idioms considering the selection of idioms, gender of the third graders and if there is a connection between the final school mark and the number of points at knowledge tests. Analysis of knowledge tests show that the third graders, who were included in the research, understand idioms, those learned in school and those from everyday life, equally well. There are no evident differences in understanding idioms among boys and girls. Results also show that the final school mark is linked to successfulness at knowledge tests. Students with higher final mark in school subject Slovene were more successful at knowledge tests and vice versa. Students achieved an average 64 % success rate at the test. Although learning materials contain many idioms, examination of the curriculum for Slovenian language as mother tongue show that idioms are not given a lot of attention. Idioms have a great value for Slovenian language and that is why teachers should introduce idioms to students more, encourage them to think about and to form the right meaning.
