magistrsko delo
Abstract
Poškodbe možganov človeku hitro in korenito spremenijo življenje.

Impact of art creativity on self-image improvement in a person with a brain injury |
Secondary abstract: |
A brain injury can change an individual's life quickly and radically. Due to the possible severe consequences, a long-term rehabilitation is needed. This is vital for recovery which helps individual's return to life as it was before. The purpose of this given master's thesis was to find out if artistic creativity could help improve the self-image of a person who has had a brain injury.
The theoretical section presents what self-image is; how it is perceived by different authors and which dimensions of self-image do we know. Presented next is brain injury; its consequences, procedure of rehabilitation after the brain injury and what the role of a special education teacher is in the rehabilitation process, key contents about art therapy, the role of art in our daily routine as well as in the rehabilitation process. Artistic creativity with its positive consequences will then be discussed.
In the empirical section a case study is presented which is based on executing continuous creative art activities with a person who has had a brain injury. The empirical section includes comparing the individual's general, emotional, social and physical self image at the beginning of the case study as well as at the end.
The case study at the centre of this master's thesis is that of a 25-year-old man who had a severe brain injury in 2012. His self-image was tested before and after his participation in the artistically creative activities with the use of a partly adjusted SPA questionnaire. Total number of executed art creativity classes was 17.
The results show improvement in all of five evaluated self-image dimensions: emotional, social, physical and general. While creating he was personally developing and slowly getting better. He was discovering his skills and dealing with challenges easier every time.
Despite the fact that this is a case study and it is hard to generalize the results to the entire population, they show us that the use of artistically creative activities can be a useful approach in improving self-image in the rehabilitation process after a brain injury. |
