Abstract

Secondary abstract: This Master's Thesis titled Perception and Experience of Artworks by Fifth-Grade Elementary School Students includes a case study focusing on the perception and experience of sculpted works of art (e. g. Boris Kidric Memorial in Maribor) by 5th grade elementary school students through three different stages, where each stage complements and adds to the previous one. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the significance of fine art in the life of an individual person is explained, the concepts of art and art work are defined, the differentiation between an original work and a reproduction is made, different methods for better presentation of student's artworks are mentioned, the methods of aesthetic transfer and aesthetic experience are presented, and the significance of space in experiencing art is explained. In the empirical part, three lessons were planned and carried out (the last one was divided into two parts) within the scope of a case study, which was concluded involving a class of 5th grade students attending an elementary school in Maribor. These lessons were our means to investigate how students perceive and experience the Boris Kidric Memorial in Maribor - first through observing the reproduction without any additional information, then through observing the reproduction while listening to a presentation on the form, theme and context, and finally through observing the sculpture in its authentic space. The case study showed that the easiest preparation and implementation of the lesson by teacher is when students are shown the reproduction without any additional information, however with this approach, the students come away with least new knowledge. If the teacher enriches the lesson with carefully chosen information, the students can better perceive the reproduction, especially through their written notes. However, the best experience for the students is an actual visit of the artwork in its authentic space, where they can also use their other senses, not only their sight, to absorb more information. Progress is also evident in the students' artworks, specifically in the precision of their execution and the number of details they choose to include. In conclusion, the key observation of this thesis is that a visitation of an artwork in its authentic space provides a rich experience for the student, and it enables the student to perceive the artwork with senses other than sight, which leads to better appreciation of art. The sole obstacle was insufficient time when visiting the authentic space.
