Abstract

V drugem, empiričnem delu diplomske naloge, so preverjena mnenja javnosti o policistih in njihovih osebnostnih značilnostih.

Secondary abstract: Being a police officer is one of the most risky, stressful and psychologically burdening profession one can imagine. Police officers are required to have a strong personality which allows them to overcome any obstacle while not breaking under daily pressures, posed by their line of work. Among the researchers there is a common opinion that the police personality does not exist, but that the profession of policeman is very stereotypically oriented which leads to certain personality traits being pinned on them. The most common police personality traits mentioned by authors of scientific articles are authoritarianism, suspicion, cynicism, isolation and solidarity, conservatism and conventionality, machismo, pragmatism, prejudice and violence. As a main goal of this thesis each one of these personality traits is presented. Questions, whether the police personality really exists, how it emerges, which are its main traits and whether the police have certain personality traits that are unique in comparison to persons who are not employed by the police, are raised. Thesis includes lessons on police profession, their duties and objectives. General facts about personality and its development, personality and personal features of police officers as a result of police work are presented. In most professions stress plays a big role which is why the focus is also on on how stress affects the profession of a police officer. In the second, empirical part of the thesis, public opinion about police officers and their personality characteristics is examined. The main hypothesis in the course of empirical part was that the ordinary citizens' personality differs from people who work as police officers.
