magistrsko delo
Abstract

ǂThe ǂimpact of the beginners yoga class on various aspects of mental health |
Secondary abstract: |
In the master's thesis we wanted to present the influence of a three-month yoga exercise on mental health of the participants. We were interested in a comparison with other exercises (pilates, aerobics, advanced yoga) and language course to find out if there are differences between different group activities and yoga and the possible positive impact of yoga on individual components of mental health, more specifically on the reduction of depressive and anxiety symptoms, on a reduced degree of stress and an increase in mindfulness and well-being. The study included 62 beginners of yoga (experimental group), who were compared to 14 pilates participants, 19 participants in aerobics training, 27 participants in the language course and 36 participants in the advanced yoga. The participants have solved the following battery of tests: WHO-5 - World Health Organization Well-Being Index, DASS-21 - Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales, FFMQ - Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. To interpret the results, we also helped with the analysis of additional questions where the participants gave an evaluation of the exercise / course. The results confirmed the beneficial effect of yoga on all of these components, thus reducing the symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and a significant increase in well-being, as well as an increase in individual components of mindfulness (observing, non-reactivity to inner experience, describing). The groups were homogeneous according to the level of mental health, as they did not significantly differ in the level of mental health at the time of the first test. During the 1st test the expected differences between the experimental group and the advanced group of yoga came into being, having the first significantly higher values of stress and lower values of well-being and mindfulness (non-reactivity to inner experience). By means of comparisons between groups we found that the physical activity itself, whether aerobics, yoga, pilates, helps to reduce the symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, and an increase in well-being, but the influence of yoga is superior (favorable influence on all investigated components). Furthermore, we have found that yoga and pilates influence the increase in mindfulness. We can conclude that the mental health of the participants of the initial yoga group improved, but we also saw a favorable trend in the group of aerobics and pilates. The research has an important value for health workers; it offers an alternative, supplemental treatment of symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, the most common disorders. |
