Abstract

Secondary title: The quality of life of patients with a deep brain stimulation
Secondary abstract: Theoretical background: We described deep brain stimulation, when it is used and for what. We also enquired how deep brain stimulation is treated in Slovenia, and researched health educational work of a nurse working with a patient with deep brain stimulation and the patient’s quality of life. Methodology: For the theoretical part, we used the descriptive method of work, where we referred to all the available literature. The research part was based on qualitative methodology. With the help of Marjory Gordon's eleven functionary health patterns, we composed a questionnaire for an interview on the basis of which we gave nursing diagnoses. Results: In studying the case we came to conclusions that the patient's pain disappeared, however, other new symptoms appeared. We made several nursing diagnoses. The use of programmer does not present any problems for the patient. Deep brain stimulation increases the quality of life if the patient chosen is suitable. Conclusion: Life after deep brain stimulation changes and in most cases positively affects the quality of life. The nurse plays a crucial role in educating the patients and relatives.
