Abstract

Podatke smo pridobili z apliciranjem testne baterije, ki je zajemala vprašalnik Velikih pet dejavnikov osebnosti (BFI), lestvico samozavedanja (SCS), vprašalnik ruminacije in refleksije (RRQ), vprašalnik hipohondrije (HAI) in vprašalnik samodiagnoze.

Secondary title: Occurrence of health anxiety and its effect among students
Secondary abstract: Personality plays a significant and important role in thinking and behaviour in conjunction with concern about our health (Cox, Borger, Asmundson and Taylor, 2000). Subject to their personality traits, psychology students may develop a type of hypochondria during their studies that includes self-diagnosis, the so-called Psychology Student Syndrome. The objective of this Master's Thesis is to examine how personality dimensions are associated with hypochondria and self-diagnosis, and if there are any differences between psychology students and students of other majors whose main focus does not lie on working with people. The final sample consisted of 307 subjects, out of which 184 psychology students. Data were obtained by applying a test battery that included Big Five Inventory (BFI), Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS), Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire (RRQ), modified Short Health Anxiety Inventory (HAI) and Psychological Symptoms Subscale. The analysis of the entire sample was followed by an analysis of the subsample containing only psychology students by means of hierarchical regression. Moderation in the psychology students' subsample was examined by means of Process Macro. The results of the study on the whole sample showed that psychology students are more prone to self-diagnosis than students of other majors. The psychology student subsample showed that the phenomenon of hypochondria in these students is statistically significantly positively predicted by neuroticism, private self-awareness, diagnosis of mental disorder of the student and sessions held with professional therapists. Diagnosis of mental disorder of the student and degree of study are statistically significant positive predictors of self-diagnosis in psychology students. The obtained results suggest the possible existence of Psychology Student Syndrome and shall prove useful in mental health interventions in future psychologists during their studies.
