Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂlink between job demands, work-related rumination and work-family conflict with cognitive functions
Secondary abstract: Cognitive failures in everyday life (for example, driving in the wrong direction in a one-way street) and at the workplace (for example, closing the wrong web window) occur regardless of the professional orientation and the complexity of the work itself. The purpose of this thesis is to examine cognitive failures and to find a cause for lower level of cognitive functioning at the workplace. We have examined some aspects of work - work-related rumination, work-family conflict and job demands - which could predict concentration, attention and cognitive failures. The sample consisted of 207 employees (of which 54.1 % were women), between ages 20 and 69 (MAGE = 42.92 years), with different levels of education. First, we applied the test battery that contained the demographic part, Work-Family Conflict (WFC) and Family-Work Conflict (FWC) Questionnaire, Work Related Rumination Questionnaire (WRRQ), Workplace Cognitive Failure Scale (WCFS) and Job Demands and Resources Questionnaire. The concentration was measured using a cognitive test for attention d2. The hypotheses we made on the basis of past literature were tested with regression analysis and mediation analysis using the SPSS Process Macro tool. The results showed that the predictors of cognitive failures at the workplace are work-family conflict, affective rumination and problem-solving pondering. Workplace cognitive failures - through mediators of problem-solving pondering and work-family conflict - are also an important predictor of cognitive failures. Emotional job demands are - through mediators of affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, detachment and work-family conflict - also an important predictor of cognitive failures. Concentration rate predictors (measured by cognitive test) have not been shown to be statistically significant.
