magistrsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: Challenges and pitfalls of multilingualism in kindergarten education
Secondary abstract: In our master's thesis we focused on the phenomenon of multilingualism among pre-school children in kindergartens in Bela Krajina. We wanted to determine the relationship between foreign-speaking children and other children in the group, and finally between foreign-speaking children and their kindergarten teachers. In the theoretical part, we examined the theory related to the multilingualism and its advantages and disadvantages, the definition of foreign-speaking children in the Slovenian Constitution, and lastly the appearance of discrimination and code switching among kindergarten children. In the empirical part, we used a self-made observation sheet while we observed five different kindergartens in Bela krajina, which are: the kindergarten Vinica, the kindergarten Loka, the kindergarten Čardak, the kindergarten Sonček Semič and the kindergarten Metlika. Using the observation sheet, we confirmed or rejected hypotheses. Our main focus was to observe the communication between foreign-speaking children and other children in the group, likewise, the communication between multilingual children and kindergarten teachers, the presence of discrimination, the use of different methods of work and didactic tools, the responses of educators to the children's mistakes, and children's participation in various activities.
