Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂeffects of encouraging consumation of water and sugar free tea in primary schools
Secondary abstract: We studied the effect of a 9-month intervention (5 months active and 4 months passive): communication intervention (awareness), water intervention (replacing sugary drinks with water) as well as a combination of both (communication and water intervention) compared to no intervention (control group) in regard to a change in the type and quantity of consumed sugary drinks, to raising awareness of the risk of consumption of sugary drinks and to the proportion of overfed and obese children in the elementary school environment. Results: Following a 9-month intervention children from schools which carried out at least one intervention drank less of: (i) drinks with added sugar: 53.2 ml/day (p <0.01); (ii) beverages with sugar: 36.8 ml/day (p <0.01); (iii) soft drinks: 27.7 ml/day ( p <0.01). The difference in the change in the quantity of consumed beverages containing added sugar (Δ = 102.7 ml; p <0.01), drinks with sugar (Δ = 107.4 ml; p <0.01) and soft drinks (Δ = 98.9 ml; p <0.01) between the school, where both interventions were carried out and other schools, was statistically significant. Children from schools where both interventions were carried out, differed in improving awareness compared to children from other schools (p = 0.03). There is a difference in the proportion of overfed and obese children after the 9-month intervention in the school where both interventions were carried out (p = 0.04) (OŠ Pirniče) and in the school where communication intervention was conducted (p = 0.02) (OŠ Tone Čufar). During one school year, communication intervention alone or in combination with a water intervention is effective in reducing the number of overfed and obese children.
