magistrsko delo
Abstract

Preserving the cultural heritage of wickerwork with fine art |
Secondary abstract: |
The object of this Master's thesis is the question whether art can preserve the cultural heritage of wickerwork and horticulture, the bases of domestic self-sufficiency in Slovenia throughout time. Despite having a rich cultural history, interest in wickerwork is slowly fading away in our modern society. To prevent that, we believe a possible solution can be found by pairing contemporary art practices with a model of cultural heritage preservation, with the help of which we can create works of art, containing three fundamental components: preservation of wickerwork - consideration of contemporary consumerism - domestic self-sufficiency. Here, we ask how and in what way contemporary art practices can help revive the fading traditional trades like wickerwork, if possible at all. The thesis is split into two parts: the first, theoretical part is intended to explore the decline of wickerwork and its possible causes. One possible cause is the industrial production of wickerwork substitutes, and a general lack of interest for handcrafting. The second, practical part of the thesis is concerned with the making of a practical model, using contemporary art practices. With traditional wickerwork techniques, we made a vertical, self-sufficiency garden out of recycled materials. We have also written guidelines for realizing this project in everyday practice in the form of a manual. |
