Abstract

Secondary title: Art terminology in the exhibition catalogues of the Art Gallery of Maribor
Secondary abstract: We are often coming across an exhibition catalogue, which is part of the art history profession. It looks as though the Slovenian language as a professional language is in danger from being displaced by the English language. Art history is also suffering from a lack of professional Slovenian terminology. The profession is still missing its own terminological dictionary; therefore, we are forced to look for the terminology in professional handbooks, like textbooks, in monographs and articles of experts. The exhibition catalogue as a literary genre has not yet been thoroughly defined or analysed in any way. Our goal was to thoroughly present exhibitions catalogues of the Art gallery Maribor, in which we observed the design and content structure and professional terminology. In continuation, we analyse them with regards to their origin, word count and word class. The analysis has shown a predominance of substantive one-word expressions, which are mostly adopted. It has shown that multiple different terms are being used for the same meaning, which should be avoided within the profession in order to avoid confusion. However, these texts also contain style and spelling errors. The profession does not operate at the demanded professional level due to a lack of precisely defined terminology, therefore it is a priority to standardize the terminology and document it in a single document - a professional monolingual dictionary.
