Abstract
Začimbne in zdravilne rastline so najbolj zanimale sedmošolce, manj osmošolce in najmanj devetošolce.

Interest of pupils in Kamnik for useful plants, their self-esteem and attitude toward drugs |
Secondary abstract: |
The purpose of this research has been to establish if interests in five groups of useful plants is related to pupils’ self-esteem. It has also been researched if pupil's age and gender have an impact. The figures have been collected with a survey. 286 pupils from the 7th, 8th and 9th grade have participated. The research has been carried out in primary schools, where pupils differ according to urban or rural lifestyle.
Pupils are mostly interested into plants which help healing wounds, plants which can be used for herbal tea and plants which prevent inflammation. Pupils' interests into indoor plants or plants which are used for decoration on window panels is quite average. Pupils are the least interested into plants used for extracting opium and heroin from a poppy. Seasoning and medicinal plants are the most interesting to seventh-graders, a bit less to eighth-graders and the least to ninth-graders. Decorative plants and organic food production are of highest interest for seventh-graders, less for eighth-graders and the least for ninth-graders. Plants used for drugs, however, are less interesting for seventh-graders than eighth and ninth-graders. Girls are not as interested into decorative plants and organic food production as boys. It has been established that pupils’ self-esteem is strongly related to their interests into individual groups of useful plants. The young who have positive self-esteem are interested into seasoning and medicinal plants as well as decorative plants and organic food production. It has also been established that the surveyed pupils’ self-esteem is high. The statement “I think I am as good as other people.” has been highly rated. Other statements such as “I think I can be proud on many things.”, “Generally, I am satisfied with myself.” And “I can do things just as good as the majority of people.” It has also been established that pupils from school 1 and 2 have higher grade of self-esteem as pupils from school 3. Moreover, seventh-graders and eighth-graders also have higher grade of self-esteem as ninth-graders. Generally, girls’ self-esteem is more positive than boys.
Pupils’ attitude towards drugs has also been researched and it has been established that most pupils are generally against smoking marijuana. However, they are not against people drinking one or two alcoholic drinks more times a week. Half of pupils are strongly against smoking ten or more cigarettes a day. Pupils believe that the young do drugs because people they hang out with do drugs. On the one hand, about half of the pupils agree that marijuana should be legalised. On the other hand, more than half of them believe that people addicted to drugs are only ill, not criminals.
It has been established that interests into individual groups of useful plants are partially related to pupils’ views on smoking, drinking alcohol and doing drugs. Positive correlation to interests into plants and drugs has been determined with pupils who have experienced smoking cigarettes, being drunk and pupils who agree with the statement that cannabis/marijuana should be legalised and who are not against smoking cannabis/marijuana.
This research can help teachers and all professional workers in educational system forming education process. Teachers can adjust curricula to pupils’ interests and raise awareness among the young about safe usage of plants and possible dangers related to it. |
