translations of culturally-specific elements and loanwords in Oscar Wilde's novel The picture of Dorian Gray

Abstract

Secondary abstract: This master's thesis focuses on the research of retranslation based on translations of culturally-specific elements and loanwords in Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The novel was first translated into Slovene by Stanko Vurnik in 1924, while the second translation was made by Rapa Šuklje in 1965. The aim of the analysis is to evaluate the adequacy of both translations into Slovene, to define the level of domestication and foreignization and to establish the frequency of omissions. In the theoretical part of the thesis, a descriptive method was used, while the empirical part is based on a comparative method employed to establish the translations' adequacy. It was concluded that there were very few mistranslations in both Slovene translations and that both translators managed to successfully transfer the culturally-specific elements and loanwords into Slovene.
