Abstract

Secondary title: Resistance to moisturizing of old wood from hay rack
Secondary abstract: The objective of this study is to find out whether recovered wood can be reused and converted into products with high added value. Wood scientists are exploring options how to obtain wood in different ways than usual, due to expected shortage of this high quality raw material in future. We carried out the research in cooperation with the company M Sora. They give a lot of attention to their ReWin project, which is based on the identification of better ways of using recovered wood. They have been active with the project for the last 5 years and have already made a number of reputed products. The project is based on wood from old hayrack, which is ready to be explored and used as best as possible. As one of the most decisive factors in further use of this wood was dampening due to moisture, our task was to determine the resistance of wood to moistening. We made samples from a hayrack's beams and prepared them for the continuation of the work. We have designed a plan of the tests that we have carried out and set the appropriate time periods for performing the measurements. We found out the density, contact angles, sorption properties and short-term as well as long-term water absorption. We obtained quite similar and high quality results after testing all the samples. Hence, considering the fact that the samples were made from two different types of wood, all the wood we tested have the same potential for being reused.
