magistrsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂrole of private self-consciousness in the relationship between self-compassion and well-being
Secondary abstract: The purpose of this master's thesis was to study the relationship between self-compassion, well-being, depression, anxiety and aspects of private self-consciousness (rumination and reflection). We differ from each other as to how much time we devote to thinking about the internal aspects of ourselves, as we also differ in how much compassion we have for ourselves. Individuals with more compassion towards themselves are characterized by having better mental health and are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, as opposed to individuals who are less compassionate with themselves. The aim of this thesis was to investigate whether the aspects of private self-consciousness - as a mediator - can explain the beneficial effects of self-compassion on depression, anxiety, and well-being. The sample covered 164 participants (56 men and 108 women), aged 16 to 64, with different levels of education. Data were collected online, with tests containing a demographic part, Rumination and Reflection Questionnaire, The Self-compassion Scale, Mental health continuum - short form, State Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression. The hypotheses were verified with the SPSS program and Process Macro SPSS connector. The results of our research have shown that self-compassion is negatively related to rumination, depressive symptomatics and anxiety, and is positively related to reflection, the common result of well-being and aspects of well-being. Rumination was positively linked with the symptoms of depression and anxiety, while reflection had a positive connection with only one aspect of well-being (psychological well-being) and statistically insignificant links to the overall result on MHC-SF and to the other two aspects of well-being (emotional, social well-being), with anxiety and symptoms of depression. Through mediator analyses we found that self-compassion predicts depression directly, while it predicts anxiety and well-being directly and indirectly through rumination.
