magistrsko delo
Abstract

Creativity and verbal skills in adult hearing children from deaf families |
Secondary abstract: |
Native language has a big impact on perception of the world and different skills of individuals. Among studies that have focused on such phenomena there are also those that focus on deaf individuals whose native language is sign language. We observed a lack of studies focusing on the impact of sign language as the mother tongue on hearing individuals, children of deaf parents. The aim of this study was to find out whether growing up in a home with primarily nonverbal communication (in our case Slovenian sign language) has an impact on creativity, verbal skill, and propositional thinking of hearing individuals. On a sample of 58 individuals (29 with deaf and 29 with hearing parents), we found out that those with hearing parents scored higher on tests of creativity and propositional thinking than those with deaf parents. However, there were no significant differences in verbal skill between the groups. We also found out that individuals with parents with more severe hearing loss scored higher on the creativity test compared to those with parents with milder hearing loss. Based on the results, we can conclude that differences in creativity and verbal skills among general population and individuals with deaf parents in fact exist. |
