Abstract

Secondary abstract: Introduction: Sleep is of essential importance for life, for it allows the body to regenerate and rest. During the aging process the elderly experience various sleep related issues, which can severely affect their quality of life. The purpose of this thesis is to present sleep related issues which can present themselves in the elderly in nursing home. Research methodology: The research was based on the quantitative method. We have used transverse descriptive research with the questionnaire method. The questionnaire encompassed questions of both closed and open types. Questions including an evaluatory scale were used as well. 62 elderly people aged over 65 participated. Results: The research found the elderly self-evaluate their quality of sleep as good. Over 64% of the participants evaluated their sleep quality as very good or good. The issues participants report are that they require more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, that they wake during the night or early in the morning. A frequently reported issue is also that they wake for use of the bathroom (71%). Conclusion: Almost every elderly person has some sleep related issues. It is very important that we identify these issues early on and find their underlying causes, for in doing so we can help the person and aid in elevating the quality of life in old age
