Abstract

Secondary title: The dying elderly person in the institutional care: the nursing staff perspective
Secondary abstract: Introduction: On a global scale the share of the elderlies is rapidly increasing, and with it also the life expectancy of people. A great share of the elderlies spends their terminal phase of life in a nursing home, where palliative care is of great importance. In the diploma thesis we have described palliative care of an elderly in the process of dying in an instititional care, and found what are the aspects and views of the healthcare team about palliative care of en elderly in the process of dying. Methods: The basis for writing the diploma thesis was summarized from technical and scientific literature, articles and internet sources (scientific articles). We used quantitative research method with deductive approach. We have acquired the data with the help of the survey questionnaire. According to the prepared codes, we analysed their occurrence with the healthcare team. Results: The results of the survey showed that the healthcare team from the chosen institutions is very fond of the dying elderlies, they feel qualified to perform palliative care, which is crucial for ensuring comfort of the dying person. From the results of the survey, we can conclude that they are trying to ensure good healthcare, although they believe there is not enough available staff. Discussion and conclusion: The comparative surveys showed similar results, that is why we have concluded that the palliative care in institutional care is still not organized enough and supported with courses, because our opinion on knowing something we were not trained for can also be overrated.
