magistrsko delo
Abstract

Translating romance novels' titles from English into Slovene - from Jane Austen to Jayne Ann Krentz |
Secondary abstract: |
Romance novels are an interesting phenomenon, as they are very popular among readers, yet frequently criticised by critics. Despite a relatively low interest from the academic community, the romance genre is flourishing, and more and more authors decide to write romance novels. The translator should make sure that his/her translation has the same effect on readers' emotions as the original. Engaging the reader's emotions is an essential feature of every romance novel. Every literary title has a significant meaning, as it makes the book stand out among many. Often people buy a book because they like the title. Therefore, it is of great importance to preserve the alluring function of the title. In the thesis we focused on the functions of the titles and translation strategies used when translating romance novels' titles. In the theoretical part of the study we presented the romance genre and its development based on the scientific literature. We described functions of the literary titles and the skopos theory. We also presented translation strategies that we used for our analysis. In the empirical part we analysed 160 romance novels' titles and their Slovene translations and divided them according to the function and translation strategy. In the conclusion of our study we summarized our findings about most commonly used functions and translation strategies. |
