Abstract

Secondary title: Football violence - fans perspective
Secondary abstract: We often tend to associate football supporter groups with violence. Football has many positive elements but also many negative ones. One of those is violence which is and will always be a part of the sport. Many factors contribute to it, such as poor match organization, alcohol and drugs consumption. The majority of people are of the opinion that the violence is caused by fans themselves, only some attribute it to the poor organization and only a few blame the police. Horrible accidents occur elsewhere in Europe and around the word, some of them also cause severe injuries and even deaths. Football hooliganism is a global phenomenon originating in England in the 14th century. Security institutions can do a lot to prevent violence. A common practice abroad is to place cameras at stadiums, which can help identify those who contribute to wrongful behaviour. Problems are also avoided by scheduling matches at earlier times of the day. In Slovenia, there are about eight bigger supporter groups, however some of them are stagnating due to poor performances of the teams they root for. The biggest two groups are Green Dragons and Viole Maribor. Football fan groups and activities are less developed here that in other European countries which contributes to less violence here than abroad. Slovenia has laws which state what is allowed at football matches and what is not. There are two specific police authorizations which ensure safety and order and prevent violence at sports events. Those two are the prohibition of sports event attendance and the prohibition of travelling.
