Abstract

Secondary title: Role of the Slovenian School Museum in learning about the educational system history in the fourth and fifth grades of elementary school
Secondary abstract: Through history the role and the function of museums have changed greatly. Nowadays museums have been taking on different roles and one of their main objectives is to educate as many people as possible. This is also the mission of the Slovenian School Museum. In the Master's thesis we researched its role in teaching pupils of the 4th and 5th grade of elementary school about the history of education. The theoretical part focuses on the role of museums in different historical periods and on modern museum trends. One of the most important roles of museums is educating people, therefore they often cooperate with educational institutions. We analysed the pedagogical approach of museums, how teaching is carried out in museums and how they motivate students. The Slovenian School Museum also strives towards an effective cooperation with schools. We described the contents of the exhibition Education in Slovenia Through the Centuries and the museum's classes. We analysed the museum's Pedagogical programmes for the school year 2018/2019 and tried to find parallels with the curriculum of the subject Society which is taught in the 4th and 5th grade of elementary school. The research which is presented in the empirical part included 61 teachers of the 4th and 5th grade of elementary school who visited the Slovenian School Museum with their pupils in April, May or June. We also conducted an interview with the Director of the Slovenian School Museum. We concluded that most teachers are aware of the importance of preparing the pupils for the visit of the museum. The method they use to prepare the pupils is, however, different. A high number of teachers assessed that the visit of the museum entirely covers many of the general learning objectives of the curriculum for the subject Society (2011). The provision of images and illustrative material was assessed as very important for the motivation of pupils by the highest number of teachers. The research shows that half of the teachers believe that the frontal teaching method is the most suitable method for the visit of the exhibition. In most cases teachers evaluate the outcome of the visits by listening to the pupils' impressions. With the acquired results we answered to the research questions and also provided a few specific proposals on how to improve the cooperation between schools and the Slovenian School Museum and make it more effective.
