Abstract

Telesna dejavnost izboljša samopodobo in samozavest, poveča občutek vključenosti v lastno življenje in sprejetosti v družbi.

Secondary title: Subjective perception of effect of physical activity on mood disorders among older adults who experienced severe psychological distress
Secondary abstract: Regular physical activity has positive effect on both physiological and psychological functions. Older adults have a higher risk for developing chronic illnesses as well as cognitive decline. Therefore, regular physical activity has an important role. Physical activity and mental health have received considerable attention in the last few decades. There is a growing evidence for a positive correlation between physical activity and improved mental health. It has been found that there is low to moderate antidepressant effect of physical activity. There are physiological and psychosocial mechanisms that have effect on mood changes. Researchers agree that there are multiple interactions between different factors, which contribute in variable ways to mood changes. To confirm this statement, more scientific research is needed in this field. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of subjective perception of physical activity on the mood of older women, who experienced severe mental distress. Qualitative research was used to assess how physical activity effects mood and other aspects of life among older women. We also wanted to identify psychosocial mechanisms that moderate mood changes and impact the quality of life. Our findings show that physical activities have a positive effect on mood changes and improve the quality of life among older women, who experience severe mental distress. Different changes in psychological and sociological mechanisms have been identified. Physical activity improves one self-esteem and self-concept, as well as feeling of grater engagement in life and social acceptance. All factors in some degree contribute to positive changes in the quality of life, resulting in improved mood changes. Physical activity was shown to be a useful strategy, which can be used to help people with mood disorders. Especially among older adults, there can be a great improvements of physical and cognitive functions. By improving these functions, we can significantly prolong their independence and quality of life.
