magistrsko delo
Abstract
Do konca 2. stoletja pr. n. Serijo so zasnovali v produkcijski hiši HBO. V seriji prepričajo zvestoba in domiselna uporaba antičnih virov (že prevzem osrednjih junakov Lucija Vorena in Tita Pulona) ter številni prikazi rimskega družbenega, političnega in verskega življenja.

The Downfall of the Roman Republic in light of contemporary modern culture (TV series Rome) |
Secondary abstract: |
The main aim of the masters thesis is to study the time period between the final phase of the Gallic Wars and the death of Caesar, including his assassination itself, and compare it to what was depicted in the first season of the TV series "Rome" (2005-2007). Up until the end of the 2nd century BC, Rome became the strongest military force in the Mediterranean. Even though the external expansion of the Roman Republic was a very big success at the time, many internal problems remained unresolved. Several leading politicians tried to solve these problems, but they were unsuccessful. After the bloody dictatorship of Sulla the First Triumvirate was formed, whose main goal was to impose control over Roman politics. Leading role in the First Triumvirate eventually went to Gaius Julius Caesar, who had proven himself as a capable military commander during his conquest of Gaul. The Civil War which lasted between the years 49 and 45 BC, began when Caesar's former ally Pompeius turned against him supported by the Senate majority. Achieving victory in the civil war, Caesar returned to Rome and greatly consolidated his power in the following year. There was a plot to overthrow and kill Caesar which culminated in his assassination on the 15th of March in 44 BC. The final stage of the Roman Republic between 49 and 44 BC was also depicted in the first season of the TV series "Rome". The series was produced by HBO. It was filmed between the years of 2005 and 2007 mostly on sets in Sofia and Rome. TV series "Rome" is widely regarded as one of the best TV series about the Roman Republic by many critics around the world. Among many positive traits of the series, the innovative use of original ancient sources (already visible in the choice of main characters Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo) and numerous authentic screen presentations of Roman social, political and religious life should be particularly emphasized. Compared to some well known interpretations of the downfall of the Roman Republic in contemporary historiography, the series doesn't show particular affinity to defenders of the dying Republic, e. g. Cato and Cicero. It stresses weakness of the Republican institutions and highlights Caesar and Octavian who are mostly portrayed as "success stories" despite their role in the demise of the Republic. |
