Abstract

Uporabljene so bile baze PubMed, CINAHL in ScienceDirect.

Secondary title: Quality of life of people with epilepsy - psychosocial view and the role of a nurse
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Epilepsy is a neurological disease that leads to changes in an individual's life. A person with epileptic seizures faces limitations that greatly affect their quality of life, such as psychological problems (fear, depression, lower self-esteem) and social problems (unemployment, loss of driving privilege, social isolation). Purpose: The purpose of this diploma work is to present the problem and psychosocial aspect of epilepsy, as well as the role of the nurse in the course of treatment of patients with epilepsy. Methods: The diploma work uses a descriptive method, with a review of professional, transparent and original scientific literature. The selected literature is Slovenian, English and Croatian. In the analysis are used aticles which include studies of epilepsy, quality of life with epilepsy, and the impact of nursing on the quality of life of people with epilepsy. The bases used were PubMed, CINAHL and ScienceDirect. Results: Not only do people with epilepsy cope with seizures, but their diagnosis is also a challenge in the psychological and social fields. Despite the drastic advances in medicine and positive results in treatment of epilepsy, most are still victims of stigmatization and discrimination. This disease is characterized by the fact that it brings different changes and limitations in life, which are playing an important role in the quality of life. A nurse with advanced knowledge of epilepsy can significantly contribute to a more successful course of treatment, better knowledge of the disease, and reduced stigmatization of people with epilepsy. Discussion and conclusion: Epilepsy is one of the most common and also stigmatized chronic diseases. Persons' successful adapting to the diagnosis and the limitations of the disease have a positive effect on the psychosocial aspect of life, which is closely linked to the quality of life. In this area nursing can greatly contribute. With special knowledge of epilepsy a nurse can professionally advise, inform and guide patients towards positive health and quality life.
