(magistrsko delo)
Abstract

Sleep disorders in the elderly |

Theoretical background: Compared to all other age groups, sleep disorders are more common in the elderly. The purpose of the master's thesis was to identify the sleeping habits – the problems that occur in the sleep in the elderly, as well as the quality of life in the elderly.
Research methodology: 200 elderly people from the Pomurje region participated in the survey. PSQI and WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires were used as the research instrument. The survey ran from July to December 2018. Data were analysed using the IBM SPSS Statistics computer program. Methods of inferential statistics were used to test the hypotheses.
Results: The results show, that more than half of the elderly (60,5 %) rated their sleep in the last month as fairly good. It has been determined that, on average, the elderly with sleep problems are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied ( = 3,21; s = 0,809) with their health; they are also neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their ability to perform daily life activities ( = 3,40; s = 0,879), but mostly have enough energy for daily life ( = 3,47; s = 0,884). Differences were discovered in health satisfaction and performing daily life activities among the elderly, depending on whether they had sleep problems; but no differences were discovered in sleep quality between men and women.
Conclusion: Quality sleep is essential as it affects many body functions, it has to be promoted and maintained. Sleep disorders lead to changes in psychophysical functions, which manifest as decreased physical strength and endurance, impaired movement coordination, overall poor well-being and may also lead to other health problems. |
