Abstract

Secondary title: The relationship between the intensity of Instagram use and self-esteem, the styles of attachment and social comparison
Secondary abstract: The popularity of the Instagram social network has increased dramatically in recent years, however, Instagram remains highly unexplored in Slovenia. Therefore, the aim of the thesis was to explore how the intensity of Instagram use is related to the level of self-esteem, the tendency to social comparison and attachment styles, and to the connection between an individual's attachment style and its tendency to social comparison. The study involved 250 individuals, 70 men and 180 women. The online questionnaire consisted of basic demographic questions and the following tools: the adjusted Facebook Intensity Scale (Ellison, Steinfeld, & Lampe, 2007); the adjusted Social Comparison Questionnaire on Facebook (Steers, Wickham, & Acitelli, 2014); the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965); and the Adult Attachment Scale - AAS (Collins, 1996). It was found that the more intensively individuals use Instagram, the more they compare themselves with other users on Instagram. Statistical analysis showed that there is no statistically significant correlation between self-esteem and the intensity of use of Instagram. It also showed that there is no statistically significant difference in the intensity of Instagram use between individuals with secure and individuals with avoidant attachment styles, nor between individuals with anxious and individuals with avoidant attachment styles. However, it turned out that individuals with an anxious attachment style use social comparison on Instagram more than individuals who have a secure attachment style. There is no statistically significant difference between men and women in the average Instagram usage time in the last week. However, according to marital status, there are differences in average Instagram usage in the last week - married individuals use it less than those who are single or in a relationship.
